Work of Magistrate

The categories of magistrates include Executive Magistrate, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, First Class Magistrate, Second Class Magistrate and Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM). The highest magistrate in a district is the CJM.

The magistrate has limited powers. They cannot pronounce death or life imprisonment sentence in serious cases. Their main work is revenue collection, monitoring the district administration and maintaining law and order.

Work of Judge

On the other hand, the scope of the judge is wider. When a judge hears civil cases, he is called a 'District Judge' and when he hears criminal cases, he is called a 'Session Judge'. There are many levels of judges such as District Judge, High Court Judge and Supreme Court Judge. Their job is to conduct the judicial process impartially.

To become a judge, the candidate has to pass the Judicial Service Examination. According to Pay Level 9 under Uttar Pradesh PCS Judicial, a civil judge gets a basic salary of Rs 56,100, while the total salary is around Rs 70 thousand. Apart from this, facilities like housing, transport, medical, children's education and dearness allowance are also provided.
