MANDI/Shimla:
On June 23, the birth anniversary of the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister, Himachal Pradesh celebrated the remarkable legacy of a leader whose name is synonymous with dedication, resilience, and progress.
Regarded as the architect of modern Himachal, supporters assert that Virbhadra's impact on the state's political and developmental framework is unmatched.
Born on June 23, 1934, in Sarahan, Shimla district, Virbhadra was the 122nd titular Raja of the former royal state of Bushahr. He embodied the elegance of royalty while dedicating his life to public service. His education at Colonel Brown Cambridge School (Dehradun), Bishop Cotton School (Shimla), and St Stephen’s College (Delhi) laid a strong intellectual foundation that complemented his political insight.
Record-setting career in public life
Virbhadra Singh's political career commenced in 1962 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha at just 27 years old. Over the next sixty years, he became one of the most prominent figures in Indian politics, securing five terms in Parliament and an unprecedented nine terms in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly.
His tenure as Chief Minister, spanning six terms from 1983 to 2017, is a record in itself. Under his leadership, Himachal Pradesh made significant advancements in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and tourism, transforming it from a remote hill state into one of India's most progressive regions.
Service at the national level
Virbhadra Singh also made notable contributions at the national level, serving in the Union Cabinet. His roles included Deputy Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Minister of State for Industries, and later, Cabinet Minister for Steel and for the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to inclusive growth and equitable development.
Despite his royal lineage, he maintained a strong connection with the grassroots. His ability to connect with the people, especially in the hilly areas, distinguished him as a beloved leader. Known for his warmth and approachability, he was not only a political figure but also a father figure to many.
His guiding principle, “my people are my strongest argument,” encapsulated his political philosophy, focusing on the needs of the common man during public meetings, village visits, and assembly sessions.
Trials, triumphs and unshakeable resolve
Virbhadra's political journey was not without challenges, facing intra-party disputes and corruption allegations. However, he confronted these obstacles with grace, emerging stronger each time. His return to power in 2012, despite personal and political challenges, showcased his enduring appeal and strategic acumen.
His personal life was deeply intertwined with tradition and public service. He was first married to Ratna Kumari of Jubbal and later to Pratibha Singh of Keonthal, a three-time Member of Parliament from Mandi. His son, Vikramaditya Singh, currently serves as an MLA from Shimla-Rural.
Virbhadra Singh passed away on July 8, 2021, due to complications from COVID-19 and multiple organ failure. His death marked the conclusion of an era, yet his influence endures. On his birth anniversary, political leaders, citizens, and admirers across the country pay homage to a man who transcended the role of a politician to become an institution.
