Amazon has unveiled ambitious expansion plans with a promise of thousands of new jobs across the UK, underpinned by a staggering £40 billion investment over the next three years.

Locations such as Hull and Northampton are in line for brand new warehouses, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer labelling the growth strategy as adding a "major win to Britain's basket."

The online retail behemoth has grand designs to open an Amazon fulfilment centre in Hull this year, creating approximately 2,000 positions, while another 2,000 jobs will be created with the launch of a Northampton warehouse at some time next year.

Not stopping there, Amazon has said it wants to build two additional warehouses in the East Midlands by 2027, although specifics on their locations are yet to be revealed..

These forthcoming sites are predicted to spark a hiring frenzy, adding thousands more jobs to Amazon's huge British workforce.

Renowned for their meticulous order processing capabilities, these vast fulfilment centres not only handle traditional warehousing duties but also incorporate cutting-edge technologies such as robotics.

Growing its physical footprint in the UK, Amazon, which employs 75,000 Brits, is set to broaden its London headquarters, solidifying its position in the high-tech Shoreditch district with two innovative office developments.

The investment encompasses the lion's share of the £8 billion already allocated for data centres across the UK, and includes funds for enhancing operations and infrastructure such as drone technology, its streaming service Prime, and improvements to staff wages and benefits.

Sir Keir Starmer hailed Amazon's £40 billion investment as a significant triumph for Britain, stating: "Amazon's £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain's basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business."

He emphasised the impact on employment, saying: "It means thousands of new jobs - real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills, and support their families."

Chancellor Rachel Reeves lauded the move as a "powerful endorsement of Britain's economic strengths".

Echoing the sentiment of nationwide benefit, Amazon's CEO Andy Jassy commented: "When Amazon invests, it's not only in London and the South East - we're bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK's economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live."
