She received a Critics Choice Award, six Kids' Choice Awards, acted alongside Emma Stone and Alexandra Daddario before stepping away from the limelight. Starting her career as a child actor on Nickelodeon, Amanda Bynes seemed destined for success, but the actress known for her roles in Big Fat Liar (2002), She's the Man (2006), and Easy A (2010) is now unrecognizable, having faced mental health issues and conservatorship from 2013 to 2022.
The actress began her ascent to fame on Nickelodeon, joining the cast of the children's sketch comedy series All That in 1996 at the age of 10. Her exceptional comedic talent quickly led to her own show, The Amanda Show, which debuted in 1999. The series catapulted Amanda Bynes to stardom, earning her three consecutive Kids' Choice Awards for Favourite Female TV Star and securing her a place on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list by age 17 in 2003.
As her acting career advanced, Amanda Bynes eventually withdrew from the public eye in 2010, confronting challenges related to substance abuse, mental health, and legal troubles. She spent much of the next decade in and out of mental health treatment and was under the conservatorship of her parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes, for nearly nine years.

In recent years, Bynes has embraced her passion for fashion and sought new ways to connect with her fans. On April 15, the Sydney White star announced her participation in the subscription-based platform OnlyFans to engage directly with her followers.
Amanda Bynes chose to leave acting due to her significant body image struggles that began in the early 2000s. In a discussion with Paper magazine, the actress revealed that playing a teenage boy in the 2006 comedy She’s the Man triggered severe depression, leading her to become fixated on her appearance and abuse Adderall after discovering it was often used for weight loss.
Body dysmorphia and substance abuse caused her to drop out of Hall Pass, but it was ultimately her role in 2010’s Easy A, alongside Emma Stone, that prompted her to quit acting entirely.
“I literally couldn’t stand my appearance in that movie and I didn’t like my performance,” she told Paper, adding, “I was absolutely convinced I needed to stop acting after seeing it.” Ironically, the film was both a critical and commercial success, with Stone and Bynes receiving acclaim for their performances.
After her retirement, Bynes faced numerous personal challenges. Between 2012 and 2014, she encountered several legal issues, including a DUI and hit-and-run charges. Her erratic behavior during this time raised concerns — most notably, an incident where she allegedly started a fire in a stranger’s driveway, leading to her being placed under a 72-hour involuntary psychiatric hold.
In 2013, Amanda Bynes’ parents, Lynn and Rick Bynes, were granted temporary conservatorship due to her deteriorating mental health, and Bynes remained under this conservatorship for nearly nine years until she petitioned to terminate it in early 2022.
After the conservatorship, Bynes aimed to reconnect with her roots. She was set to reunite with her All That castmates at ’90s Con in March 2023 but canceled due to a health issue. Throughout 2023, she spent time in various mental health facilities.
In March 2024, Bynes updated fans via her Instagram Stories, stating she was dealing with depression but was improving. In the meantime, she had a brief podcast with Paul Sieminski that did not succeed, and in 2024, she collaborated with designer Austin Babbitt (aka Asspizza) on a capsule collection featuring her artwork. Their limited-run T-shirt and shorts quickly sold out, and Bynes announced plans for a pop-up art and fashion event in December.
Most recently, in April 2025, Bynes joined OnlyFans, and although the site is known for adult content, the former teen actress asserts that her only aim is to connect with her fans and not to post “any sleazy content.”
