James Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman has already made history before its theatrical debut. The film shattered Fandango’s 2025 ticket sales record for early access screenings, becoming the platform’s top-selling first-day event of the year.
The record-breaking sales came through a special partnership with Amazon Prime, offering exclusive early access screenings scheduled for July 8 at 7 PM local time three days ahead of the nationwide release on July 11, 2025. Amazon Prime members were able to purchase advance tickets via Fandango, fueling an overwhelming surge in early demand.
The new Superman film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the infamous Lex Luthor. Directed by James Gunn, the film marks a bold new chapter in the DC Universe, and it’s already generating major buzz across the industry.
According to Fandango’s 2025 Moviegoing Trends & Insight Study which surveyed over 5,000 moviegoers Superman ranks among the most eagerly anticipated films of the summer. A separate poll of more than 9,000 respondents listed Hoult’s portrayal of Lex Luthor as one of the most awaited performances of the year.
The strong early ticket sales have sparked speculation that Superman could achieve a $100 million-plus opening weekend, although no formal box office tracking has been released yet. Industry analysts are watching closely as Warner Bros. aims for another major win in a year that’s already seen Minecraft open to a stunning $162.7 million the highest debut of 2025 so far.
By comparison, previous DC blockbusters have set high benchmarks: Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman opened with $166 million in 2016, and Man of Steel debuted with $116.6 million in 2013. Meanwhile, Disney/Marvel’s Captain America: Brave New World currently leads 2025 superhero openings with $88.8 million.
