England resumed their run chase of 371 on the fifth day of the Leeds Test vs India on 21/0. Earlier, centuries from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant had ensured India got a solid lead in the second innings. India made 364 after making 471 in the first. England responded with 465.

Black Armbands

One thing to notice at the start of the final day’s play was that both England and India players were wearing black armbands? There was a moment of silence before the start of play. It was to remember someone who had passed away just a day before.

Who Are They Remembering?

So to whom were the players paying tribute. The answer is former Indian spinner Dilip Doshi. Dilip passed away on June 23 at the age of 77. Between 1979 and 1983 he played 33 Tests and took 114 wickets along with 22 ODI scalps in 15 games. Because of the likes of Bishan Bedi, BS Chandrasekhar, EAS Prasanna and Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, Doshi could not make it to the Indian team until he crossed 30. But in the little time that he played for India, he did pretty well.

"Both teams are wearing black armbands today in memory of former Indian cricketer Dilip Doshi, who passed away on Monday. The teams also observed a minute's silence before the start of Day 5," said the BCCI's official statement.

Not the First Time

This is the third time the players are wearing black armbands in this game. On the opening day it was done in remembrance of the people who lost their lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash on June 12 that had passengers from both India and Britain. On the third day, they did it in memory of former England cricketer David Lawrence, who passed away on June 21.

India’s Quest

India have come to England in a bid to win their fourth Test series on English soil and first since 2007. Shubman Gill is leading the side in this format for the first time and they are without Ravichandran Ashwin, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who have all retired. Ashwin has quit all formats while Kohli and Rohit have retired from Tests. In 2024, they retired from T20Is meaning ODIs are the only international games they still play.
