Actress Suchitra Krishnamoorthi issued an apology on Thursday night following a tone-deaf remark she made about the lone survivor of last week’s Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, Indian-born British national Vishwas Kumar Ramesh.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Krishnamoorthi wrote that she was not aware of where the rumours about Ramesh surfaced from. “Took out my last tweet on the air india crash survivor. Seems to be false news circulated for God knows what reason. My apologies [sic].”

The apology comes after she wrote in a now-deleted post on Thursday afternoon that Ramesh lied about being on-board the plane and that it was a plot completely fabricated by his family in the UK. “So this #vishwaskumarramesh lied about being a passenger on the plane & the only survivor? This is seriously weird. Didn’t his family in the UK corroborate his story? What about his brother’s funeral that he was seen giving kandha to? Deserve not only some serious punishment but some mental asylum time if this is true uff,” she wrote.

Her initial post and recent apology garnered a lot of heat on the internet, with many bashing the actress for not fact-checking before posting false information. “Your ego knows no bounds in defaming others without going into details [sic],” one person posted.

Another user commented, “How can you jump to conclusion without verifying fact on such a tragic disaster. Being irresponsible is trait of arrogance [sic].”

On June 12, Air India flight 171 en-route London crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner had 242 people on board—230 passengers, 10 crew members and 2 pilots. Sole survivor Ramesh miraculously escaped the fiery wreckage.
