Police hunting for a missing man have issued a tragic update after he was pulled lifeless from a river following an "incident in the water".

Emergency services raced to the River Tame at Oxbridge Way and Pembroke Close in Tamworth on Monday afternoon. Sadly, paramedics made the find shortly before 2pm.

Police, a land ambulance, an air ambulance and a police helicopter were spotted at the scene off Lichfield Road. The tragedy happened hours after cops were called to a property in the area. They received reports over the concern for welfare of the man.

The victim, aged 21, was flagged as a missing person which led to searches in the local area. However, the search ended after he was discovered later during the day.

His next of kin have been informed and his death isn't being treated as suspicious, reports Birmingham Live. West Midlands Ambulance Service issued a statement and said: “We were called at 1.48pm to an incident in the water nearby to Lichfield Road in Tamworth. One ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Tatenhill attended the scene. Upon arrival we found one patient. Unfortunately, it was clear that nothing could be done to save them and they were confirmed deceased at the scene.”

Staffordshire Police added: “We were called at 2am on Monday, 23 June to a property off Moor Street in Tamworth following concerns for the welfare of a man. A 21-year-old man was reported missing. Officers conducted searches in the local area along with colleagues from the National Police Air Service. Sadly, the body of a man was discovered in water off Uxbridge Close near to Dunstall Lane at around 1.30pm. His next of kin has been informed. The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
