Having endured a difficult defeat in the first Test at Headingley, Yashasvi Jaiswal was the target of criticism by fans for his fielding and response post-match. Jaiswal had dropped more than six catches in the match, some of which were crucial and aided England's grasp on the game. But most upset was a video that came out after the match, where he was seen smiling and dancing. Most found it was a bad timing, particularly with India's defeat.

England win as Duckett hits 149 in 371-run chase

England pulled off a brilliant run chase at Headingley, chasing 371 on Day 5 to win the first Test against India and take a 1-0 lead in the series. It was their second-best successful chase in Test history. Ben Duckett led the charge with a stunning 149, and his 188-run opening partnership with Zak Crawley (65) set the tone for the chase. Joe Root (53*) and debutant Jamie Smith (44*) saw it through with a calm 71-run stand.

Earlier in the last session, with less than 100 runs required, Ben Stokes came out with some aggression and weathered a couple of anxious moments, including a reverse-sweep that nearly saw him get out. Later, it was the same shot that saw him being dismissed when he holed out at short third to Shubman Gill.

India rallied briefly with Prasidh Krishna striking twice, ousting Crawley and Pope. Shardul Thakur got Duckett on 149 and Brook the very next ball to raise hopes, but Root kept his nerves. Jamie Smith chipped in, winning it in style, including two sixes off Jadeja.

The platform for the chase, however, was established in the morning by the openers. They batted despite early intimidation and asserted themselves after drinks. Duckett's elegant strokeplay and Crawley's timing were more than India's bowlers could handle on a day to forget.
