Mumbai: A private bus caught fire near Devipada Metro Station on the Western Express Highway in Mumbai’s Borivali area on Tuesday afternoon, sparking panic among metro commuters as smoke briefly entered a train halted at the station. Visuals of distressed passengers in the metro train have surfaced on the internet. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
The bus, which was empty at the time, suddenly caught fire on the road below the metro station. The blaze was quickly brought under control by firefighters, who rushed to the spot along with metro staff. While the cause of the fire remains unknown, initial assessments suggest no foul play or mechanical injury to nearby metro infrastructure.
Smoke Enters Metro Coach, Causes Panic Among Passengers
As flames and smoke rose from the bus, a Mumbai Metro train on the Red Line arrived at Devipada station. A video shared on social media by commuter Yogesh Namjoshi captured tense moments inside a smoke-filled metro coach, showing confused and distressed passengers struggling to understand the situation.
Namjoshi reported that the metro stopped at the station despite the fire below and opened its doors, allowing smoke to enter. “There were no announcements and the smoke inside was getting thicker before the doors finally closed again,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Following the public concern, Maha Mumbai Metro Operations issued an official statement acknowledging the incident. “We regret the inconvenience caused to our valued passengers,” the statement read. “A private bus on the road below Devipada station caught fire today in the afternoon. Metro staff & fire brigade responded swiftly and brought the situation under control.”
The agency clarified that due to the station’s open design, smoke briefly reached the platform and entered one coach when the doors opened. However, the situation was promptly managed at the next station, and there was no fire or hazard inside the train itself. “Metro services continued safely and uninterrupted. We thank commuters for their patience and understanding,” the statement concluded.
