Danish tennis star Holger Rune is facing a backlash from fans after he opened an online store that is listing a broken tennis racket for over £5,000. Rune is selling everything from his match-worn shirts, shorts and hats, to playing cards and posters on the site.

Despite the steep fees for items, with Nike shirts won by Rune going for north of £150 while a signed cap is going for £140, products are selling fast. However, it's the inclusion of two Babolat Pure Aero 98 rackets, which have been smashed by the fiery star during a game, that has caused controversy.

Rune, who will be featuring at Wimbledon, is also selling rackets that haven't taken quite a hit and that are listed with "a minor crack in the frame" for the still unpalatable price of £4,300.

The site says that the defunct racquets will be signed by Rune before shipment, with many items said to have been worn at tennis events such as Queen’s Club, the French and US Opens.

The current world No. 8 took to social media to explain the move, claiming the store helps fans “get closer to my world.” “To everyone who follows my journey, watches my matches, sends messages, and supports me - this is for you,” Rune wrote on X.

He also claims that a portion of the profits will go to good causes. “Part of the profits will go to various charity projects that have a special place in my heart - including Borns Vilkar, for which I am a proud ambassador,” he said.

While Borns Vilkar is listed as a Danish children's rights charity, it's unclear how much of Rune's profits will be going to the organisation. However, despite the store's clear popularity, many fans have taken against Rune's pop-up business.

He was once hailed as a rival to the game's two most dominant stars in Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. However, he has struggled in recent times, and despite picking up five singles titles, he is yet to win a Grand Slam - something angry punters have used against him when it comes to venting their feelings.

Taking to X, tennis supporters voiced their anger at the player's audacity to sell items at a shocking price. One brutally said: "Watching Alcaraz's level at Queens has made him a salesman (crying emojis)." While another added: "Are people actually buying stuff do you think."

A third said: "I, too, would become a trader if I knew I couldn’t touch sinner alcaraz levels." Another dissenter posted: "I guess if you can’t win tournaments anymore, you can at least sell something."

Rune hasn't advanced past the fourth round in a major since 2023. His best showing at a Slam came at Wimbledon and the French Open in 2023. He was also defeated by Jack Draper in the Indian Wells final in January.

However, he showed a glimpse of his talent when he beat Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Barcelona Open in April, before being knocked out of Queen's Club at the quarter-final stage by Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Danish star will be back in action at Wimbledon, which begins on Monday, June 30.
