Meghalaya Officials Respond to US Advisory

Shillong, June 25: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, has publicly disputed the recent travel advisory from the United States that associates the state and the broader North Eastern region with terrorism and violence. He plans to address this issue directly with the US Ambassador to India.

Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that Meghalaya is among the safest destinations for tourists.

The US advisory urged its citizens to reconsider travel to Meghalaya and other North Eastern states due to concerns over safety. However, it noted that no special permission is needed for travel to the capital cities of these areas.

Sangma criticized the advisory, stating, “The US Embassy has misrepresented the situation in Meghalaya and the North East. I believe this notification is inaccurate.” He confirmed his intention to present factual data to the US Ambassador, as well as to officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs.

In response to the advisory, Tynsong remarked, “It is unfortunate that the US has issued such a statement. We are unclear about the sources of their information that led to this categorization of Meghalaya.” He defended the state's reputation for safety and hospitality.

“Meghalaya is recognized as one of the safest places globally, and our residents are known for their welcoming nature,” he stated. Tynsong encouraged those who have not visited the state to speak with those who have, as they can provide a true representation of the region.

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh mentioned that the state anticipates welcoming 2 million visitors this year and has planned a series of events, including the Cherry Blossom Festivals, to attract tourists.

The government is also launching a program to recruit 'Tourist Buddies' to assist visitors at key locations. “We are hiring 50 Tourist Buddies in the capital, who will be stationed at popular tourist spots like Wards Lake, Golf Links, and Khyndai Lad,” Lyngdoh added.

A senior official from the Tourism Department revealed that the government intends to invest over ₹1,000 crore to enhance the tourism sector, which currently employs more than 50,000 individuals directly and indirectly, making it one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government.
