Good Morning Britain star Richard Arnold found himself being tactfully corrected on Wednesday's programme by guest host Martin Lewis during a light-hearted chat.

Richard was jesting with Coronation Street star Mollie Gallagher about acting as a "seat-filler" before she secured her role as Nina Lucas, which led to her winning Best Serial Performance in 2021.

"I've never won a gong at the NTAs but I'm always welcomed every year as a seat-filler so that's something, I'm still in the building!" he quipped.

Quick to clarify the situation, Martin intervened: "To defend the NTAs - having won one - the seat-fillers are actually for when you have to go up and do interviews afterwards, it's not empty seats, it's because you're going off to do interviews afterwards."

Joining in the banter, Richard countered, "They have plenty of bums on seats, of course," before adding with his usual wit, "You'll be getting another one, don't worry about it!"

Susanna Reid also assured Martin, "They're not going to take it away from you!" to which he remarked, sharing his experience, "I'm normally up against David Attenborough - it's not that easy."

Last year saw Martin lose out on the coveted award, despite a double nomination for Best Factual and Best Expert for his engaging ITV show, sparking comments from fans about his apparent irritation at the outcome, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Despite his previous triumph, Martin missed out on the award to Stacey Solomon's Sort Your Life Out and Sir David Attenborough, with eagle-eyed fans spotting him looking somewhat miffed.

He later posted: "Well you can't win em all (or any tonight! ) but thanks so much to all who voted and supported me."

Quashing any speculation of discontent, Martin shared a cheerful selfie from the event on his social media platforms.

The money-saving guru had previously outshone Sir David and Clarkson's Farm to clinch the accolade in 2022, expressing his surprise: "When you're up against an international treasure like David Attenborough you don't normally expect to win, I'm quite shocked. Whoever said we've had enough of experts, no we haven't we need them more than ever right now.

"Thank you so much to Claire and Angelica and everyone at the Martin Lewis Money Show and also to the web team who feed me the information and do the analysis for Money Saving Expert."

He highlighted the financial struggles faced by many, citing the energy crisis as catastrophic, leading to severe issues and mental health concerns, and warned of the looming mortgage crisis impacting rents.

"And you know what, we need somebody to get a grip on the economy and sort things a little bit better.

"But that's for my show next Tuesday, tonight this nerd is gonna party! Thank you and good night."

During Wednesday's GMB, Mollie Gallagher, known for her role as Nina in Coronation Street, shared her humble beginnings at the NTAs, revealing she initially attended as a "seat-filler" to ensure the venue looked packed.

"That's how you started at the NTAs and then ended up winning one," Richard lauded.

Mollie reminisced about an email from drama school inviting her to be a seat-filler at the NTAs, thinking it would be "cool" to be involved.

"I was a massive Corrie fan so I thought, 'I hope they sit me next to Corrie,' but they didn't," she continued.

She described being overwhelmed by the event, aspiring to one day be on the receiving end of such accolades, which she saw as a form of manifestation.

"I remember being in awe and thinking, 'I want this one day, this is going to be me,' it was basically a manifestation there and then. Then when it did happen, my best friend was like, 'Mollie this is so weird,' and I was like, 'I know!'" she added.

Reflecting on her unexpected win, Mollie admitted she was unprepared and has never rewatched her acceptance speech, finding it too cringe-worthy to endure.

"I did not expect to win, I was not prepared, it was a whirlwind, and that speech... I've never watched it back since, I can watch myself act but the speech, I try and watch it, and ten seconds in I go, 'Nope, not today, never!'"

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1
