In an impressive display of skill, young chess talent Aarit Kapil challenged World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen during the 'Early Titled Tuesday' online tournament held on June 25. The Delhi-born prodigy, just 9 years old, showcased remarkable composure and confidence while facing the chess legend, ultimately leading to a draw after nearly securing a victory.


Playing from his hotel room in Georgia, where he is competing in the U-10 World Chess Championships, Kapil held his ground against Carlsen, demonstrating maturity beyond his years. The match saw Kapil in a dominant position, but he was unable to convert it into a win, resulting in a draw.

A Rising Star in Indian Chess

Aarit Kapil has been recognized as a future star in Indian chess, especially after his notable victory over Grandmaster Raset Ziatdinov at the KIIT International Open in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, in December 2024. This achievement made him the youngest Indian to defeat a Grandmaster in a classical game and the third youngest overall.


Following his impressive 63-move win against Ziatdinov, Kapil has maintained an ELO rating of 1825, positioning him among the top-rated players in his category and establishing him as a formidable contender in junior chess.

Aarit Kapil's Future Aspirations

Earlier this year, Aarit Kapil earned the title of Candidate Master (CM) from the International Chess Federation (FIDE), despite not reaching the standard ELO rating of 2200. This exception was granted due to his exceptional performances, including his historic win against Grandmaster Ziatdinov.


Kapil's focus now shifts to the U-10 World Championships, where he aims for a podium finish after winning the first two rounds. He is set to compete in the third round on Wednesday, hoping to continue his winning streak.


In addition to the U-10 Championships, Aarit is also expected to participate in the U-13 and U-9 World Championships, where he will further challenge himself against top young talents from around the world.
