Manchester United have achieved a breakthrough in negotiations over a deal for Bryan Mbeumo with the Brentford frontman currently their priority signing.

The Cameroon star has just enjoyed a 20-goal season and the expectation is that he will leave west London. The Bees have been holding out for top dollar before they let him go and had laid out their payment demands, but United are closing on an agreement.

The basics of a deal for the 25-year-old are in place and discussions are now centring on how the add-ons would work as well as the structure of payments, reports ESPN.

United are due to pay an initial fee of around £60million with there being an additional £5m in add-ons. That would take the deal to the £65m mark that Brentford were looking to receive - which will land them a mammoth profit.

It is understood that talks are "progressing positively" and those at Old Trafford are growing increasingly confident that an agreement will be reached before Ruben Amorim's squad return to preseason training on July 7 - allowing Mbeumo to feature from day one.

The player himself is waiting for permission from Brentford to undergo a medical and finalise personal terms. It could prove to be a win for the Bees in terms of finances with the club making it clear they were ready to accept a number of instalments of several years, which was United's initial hope.

Tottenham, who have appointed former Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new manager, have expressed an interest in Mbeumo and had submitted a hefty bid. However, his representatives made it clear Mbeumo's preference is to move to Old Trafford.

The Manchester outfit have already landed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, signing the Brazilian for £62.5m. He impressed at Molineux and will bolster Amorim's frontline, which is a priority this summer as several of their forwards are tipped to move on.

Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have struggled to supply the goals the team have needed. Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho have all returned from loans but could be offloaded whilst Alejandro Garnacho's departure seems inevitable.
