M&S has sparked debate among shoppers with its latest "not to be missed" sandwich featuring an unconventional twist.

The high-street favourite has boldly introduced the Strawberry and Creme sandwich, packed with succulent strawberries and lavish whipped cream cheese, all encased between slices of subtly sweetened bread.

Debuting the inventive snack on Wednesday (June 25), M&S drew inspiration from Japan's delightful "sweet sandos"-fruity concoctions that have become a sensation in London's chic Japanese bakeries.

In a statement, Ma&S shared, "Inspired by the Japanese sweet sandos, recently spotted popping up in London's trendiest Japanese patisseries, our product developers have long dreamed of creating a dessert sandwich."

Their announcement continued: "With our exclusive Red Diamond Strawberries at their juiciest best, the time has finally come to create the ultimate strawberries and creme experience.", reports the Manchester Evening News.

Elaborating on its versatility, the supermarket declared: "From alfresco lunches, afternoon tea at home, summer picnics, courtside snack breaks or a sweet afternoon pick me up, the Red Diamond Strawberries and Creme Sandwich is your go-to summer indulgence, wherever, whenever."

Despite M&S's confident promotion, the innovative offering has received mixed reviews from consumers.

On the social media group Bargain Lovers and Deals, Debbie Lyle expressed reluctance: "I'll pass on that. In cake maybe, but not bread."

Another unconvinced customer, Tanya Campbell-Gillies, said: "Gross. Surely it will make the bread soggy."

Adding to the dissenters, Um Ahmad Hussain commented: "It looks nice but I don't think it will taste nice."

Other customers have also been quick to question the sandwich, with some suggesting that there are better alternatives to use for the snack than bread.

Shopper Marguerita Bryan commented: "Between slices of Victoria sponge would be better, not bread!" Another, Tel Rose, chimed in: "Should have been sandwiched in between two scone like pieces in the shape of bread. However, while some shoppers say they will be avoiding the fruit-filled sandwich, others say they are eager to try the limited edition item.Reacting to MandS's Instagram post, blogger Vickie Neave exclaimed: "Whaaaaattttt!!!! I have not got time to be chasing around after this."

Another blogger, Faye Gooding, enthused: "Oh my, this looks incredible."

M&S have a strong history of sandwich making, with the store first selling freshly made sandwiches in the 1920s before expanding with pre-packed sandwiches in the 1980s. The retailer has since sold four billion sandwiches to date.

The limited edition Red Diamond Strawberry and Creme sandwich can be found in MandS food halls for £2.80.
