Banks in select regions of India will remain closed on Friday, June 27, 2025, in observance of regional festivals, Rath Yatra, and Kang. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) state-wise holiday schedule, these closures apply only to specific cities, while banking operations across the rest of the country will function as usual.

As per the RBI's notification, banking services will be unavailable in Bhubaneswar and Imphal on June 27. The closures are in place for Rath Yatra in Bhubaneswar and Kang in Imphal. This will lead to a three-day break for banking services in these locations, as June 28 falls on the fourth Saturday and June 29 is a Sunday. Traditionally, banks across India are closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month, in addition to all Sundays.

Understanding the Festivals

Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, is an important Hindu celebration associated with Lord Jagannath, believed to be an incarnation of Vishnu. The festival features a vibrant procession in which the deities Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are transported in elaborately designed chariots. Puri, Odisha is home to the most iconic Rath Yatra celebration, drawing millions of worshippers annually.

On the other hand, Kang, referred to as Manipur’s version of Ratha Yatra, is a ten-day religious observance celebrated by the Meitei community. While traditionally observed in July, the bank holiday aligns with its official recognition in the state.

Upcoming Bank Closures

Beyond this weekend, the next scheduled bank holiday will fall on June 30, 2025, in Aizawl, where banks will be closed to mark Remna Ni. This public holiday commemorates the signing of the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986.

Online Services Remain Accessible

Despite physical branches being closed in certain areas, online banking services will continue to operate normally across India. Customers can still access a range of digital facilities, including fund transfers via NEFT and RTGS, as well as credit and debit card services. Additional options such as chequebook requests, standing instruction setups, and locker applications are also available through the internet and mobile banking platforms.
