Best recognised for his role as Captain Jonathan 'Black Jack' Randall in Starz's Outlander, Tobias Menzies is unrecognisable from his cruel redcoat character in his latest venture F1: The Movie, reports the Scottish Daily Express.

Starring alongside Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Damson Idris and Kerry Condon, Menzies takes on the role of Formula One team board director Peter Banning.

F1: The Movie tells the story of veteran driver Sonny Hayes (portrayed by Pitt), who left Formula One years ago following severe injuries sustained in a devastating crash.

Now burdened with a gambling addiction, working odd jobs and racing in other circuits, Sonny is coaxed out of retirement by his friend and F1 team owner Ruben Cervantes (Bardem) one last time after landing a big win.

Sonny will be racing alongside rising British star Joshua Pearce (Idris), leading to inevitable clashes between the experienced driver and the rookie.

F1: The Movie represents a more modern role for Menzies, who is also celebrated for his performances as Prince Philip in Netflix's The Crown and Edmure Tully in Game of Thrones.

The actor is seen donning smart suits for his role as the APX GP board member.

Interestingly, while preparing for the film, he observed how many of the men in the corporate boxes would be attired in expensive lounge wear in muted colours.

The character of Branning was initially penned as a "wily British gentleman", who was suited and booted, but Menzies suggested the character should have a "tech bro" vibe.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski of Top Gun: Maverick fame, F1: The Movie was produced by a team including Jerry Bruckheimer, Lewis Hamilton, Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, and Chad Oman.

Menzies shared his experience of filming the movie, recalling that he and co-star Pitt had just seven minutes to get their first scene together right.

The scene was shot on the grid at Silverstone before a real race to capture the intense atmosphere and rush of 50,000 spectators.

After rehearsing for three or four days, the director aimed to create a Hollywood film feel rather than a documentary.

In an interview with the i Paper, Menzies described the sport as "like theatre on steroids" but confessed he doesn't own a car and wasn't particularly drawn to the sport initially.

However, Menzies found the world of F1 "interesting", particularly the strategies employed on and off the track.

Meanwhile, Outlander fans hoping for Menzies to appear in the eighth and final season may be disappointed, as the actor confirmed he won't be reprising his dual role.

He previously told TVLine: "What am I allowed to say? It would be great.

"[But] no, you will not see me. They're going to bring it home magnificently, I'm sure."

The seventh series of Outlander recently aired, featuring a host of familiar faces returning to the show after Roger MacKenzie (played by Richard Rankin) inadvertently travelled too far back in time. Characters such as Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek), Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), and Brian Fraser (Andrew Whipp) made their reappearance.

In Diana Gabaldon's original novel, Captain Black Jack Randall also had an encounter with Roger, but this scene was omitted from the Starz television adaptation.

Menzies is set to star in the upcoming project The Entertainment System Is Down, which is currently in pre-production.

His recent work includes roles in Manhunt, You Hurt My Feelings and Nobody Listens Anymore.
