New Delhi: Google has rolled out a new experimental app called Doppl that lets people try on outfits using an AI-generated version of themselves. Launched under Google Labs, Doppl is now live for iOS and Android users in the United States.

The app uses artificial intelligence to turn full-body photos into digital avatars, helping people visualise how clothes might look or move in real life. It’s designed to let you upload photos or screenshots of any outfit and then see it come to life on your virtual self.

Doppl lets users test outfits from photos, social media or street style

Doppl isn’t the first time Google has experimented with virtual try-on tools. The company recently added similar features to Google Shopping. But Doppl is going one step further by converting static images into short videos, which show how the fabric and fit might look while moving. According to the official blog, “Doppl brings your looks to life with AI-generated videos – converting static images into dynamic visuals.”

The app works by first asking you to upload a clear, full-body image. Once done, you can add outfit images, whether it’s a jacket you spotted at a local thrift store, something a friend is wearing, or a screenshot from Instagram, and Doppl will generate an animated try-on.

You can also share your looks with friends, save your best outfits or just scroll through different combinations. It’s sort of like having a fashion trial room in your pocket.

Google calls Doppl an early-stage experiment from Labs

The company is careful to label Doppl as an experimental product. “As a Google Labs experiment, Doppl is in its early days and it might not always get things right. Fit, appearance and clothing details may not always be accurate,” said the team in the official blogpost.

Sakshi Rambhia, Product Manager at Google Labs, and Ira Kemelmacher-Shlizerman, Principal Scientist, led the announcement, saying the app aims to help users “explore your style in new and exciting ways.”

While Google’s older virtual try-on tech was based on showing outfits on pre-selected models with different body types, Doppl personalises the experience using your own photo. That makes it feel more real, even though the fit or texture may not always match up.

For now, the app is only available in the U.S., but given how virtual fashion tools are growing in popularity, it could be something we see Google expand globally soon.

Google has not yet said when or if Doppl will be made available in India or other countries. But as with most Google Labs tools, user feedback is expected to shape what happens next.
