Polish tennis star Hubert Hurkacz will earn £33,000 from Wimbledon, despite the fact that he won't play a single match at the Championships. Hurkacz, 28, was due to face British hopeful Billy Harris in the first round on Monday, but has now confirmed his withdrawal on social media.

Last year at SW19, Hurkacz was forced to retire from his second-round clash with Arthur Fils with injury. Two weeks later, he underwent meniscus surgery on his right knee but recovered in time to return to the ATP Tour before the end of the season. However, the former World No.6 has now revealed he's suffered a significant setback from the operation.

"Not an easy post to write," he said on Instagram. "Together with my team, I've made the decision to withdraw from this year's Wimbledon. During preparations, my body reacted - synovial membrane irritation, which is part of the recovery process from my surgery.

"It needs rest and treatment, and I need to listen to my body. Thank you for all the love and support - it means the world. I'll be back soon (muscle and heart emoji)."

Under Wimbledon rules, a player who withdraws from the main singles draw will receive 50 per cent of their first-round prize money, provided the decision is made after 12pm on the Tuesday before the tournament. Hurkacz would also have to have attended the venue and been declared unfit to play by a tournament doctor.

It's worth £66k to lose in the first round at the All England Tennis Club. That means he'll still take home £33k, and with the other 50 per cent handed to a lucky loser from qualifying, who'll now play Harris instead of him.

Four years ago, Hurkacz produced his best-ever Grand Slam result, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon. He then stunned Roger Federer in the last eight, beating the Swiss icon in straight sets.

He lost to seventh seed Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals, costing him the honour of becoming the first male player from Poland to contest a singles Slam final.
