In a recent episode of the House of Glory podcast, hosted by the Gagan Narang Sports Foundation, Olympic silver medalist Ravi Kumar Dahiya shared insights into his wrestling career and future ambitions. A significant highlight from the discussion was his choice to transition to a higher weight class.
“I have decided to move away from the 57kg category as it becomes increasingly challenging with age, so I will be competing at a higher weight,” Ravi explained during the podcast.
As he prepares for the upcoming LA Olympics in 2028, where the next Olympic weight category is set at 65kg, the 28-year-old wrestler has faced numerous injuries, leading him to compete in the non-Olympic 61kg category in recent years.
Ravi also reflected on his early wrestling experiences, the sacrifices made by his father, and his admiration for Argentine football legend Lionel Messi.
He credited his father for introducing him to the sport, recounting his journey from a small mud akhara to achieving Olympic success. “My father was passionate about wrestling, and I would play at a nearby mud akhara when I was young. Initially, it was just for fun, without any professional aspirations. It was my father's love for the sport that inspired me to pursue it,” Ravi shared.
He further emphasized his father's unwavering support, stating, “Compared to my parents' sacrifices, I feel I have given up very little. Our village is about 30-35 km from Chhatrasal Stadium, which makes for a long commute. My father has been making this journey daily for nearly 20 years, regardless of the weather, and that dedication has driven me to strive for international medals.”
The podcast also explored Ravi's camaraderie with fellow wrestler Aman Sehrawat, highlighting the bond they share despite being competitors. “In sports, we may be rivals on the mat, but off it, we are all friends. Aman is like a brother to me,” he remarked.
Ravi concluded the podcast by expressing his admiration for Lionel Messi and shared how he enjoys spending leisure time with friends.
