Shubman Gill made his Test captaincy debut for India on June 20 against England in Leeds. In the match played at Headingley from June 20 to 24, he scored 147 runs in the first innings as the No. 4 batter. But despite his good show with the bat, the Indian team suffered a humiliating defeat by five wickets against the Ben Stokes-led side.
Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri has made a bold prediction for the 25-year-old right-handed batter from Punjab and said that he will be disappointed if Gill doesn’t make a big name for himself.
“I’ll be disappointed if Gill doesn’t go places. Languid, lazy elegance, and he’s got a regal element of being regal out there when he’s batting. If he can learn with exposure and adapt to conditions, I think that’s the one name I can see,” he said, speaking to Wisden.com.
“He’s matured a lot. The way he handles the media and the way he talks at press conferences and tosses—he’s matured a lot. Let him be there for three years. Don’t chop and change irrespective of what happens in the series. Stick with him for three years, and I think he will deliver for you,” he added.
Gill’s record for India
Since making his international debut for India against New Zealand in Hamilton on January 31, 2019, Gill has played 33 Tests, 55 ODIs, and 21 T20Is. He has 2048 runs to his name in the five-day format of the game and has scored 2775 runs in ODIs. Gill is the youngest batter to score a double century in the 50-over of the game.

Gill came out to bat at No. 4 for India in the first innings of the first Test and scored 147 runs from 227 balls with the help of 19 fours and one six. He is the fifth Indian captain after Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Virat Kohli to score a century on his Test debut.
