EXPLAINED: Why India, England Players Are Wearing Black Armbands During First Women’s T20I
The Indian women's team are currently taking on England in the first T20I of the five-match series at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. This will be a massive test for India as they look to win their first-ever series in England in the shortest format of the game.
The match has been an exciting one so far, with India dominating through and through and looking to seal an important win. However, the interesting thing to notice was that both teams were wearing black armbands during the game
Both the England and India teams were seen sporting black armbands as a mark of respect to the people who lost their lives in the horrific air crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 (Thursday).
"Both England Women and India Women are wearing black armbands today as a mark of respect for those who lost their lives in the Air India plane crash. Our thoughts are with all those affected by the terrible events that took place in Ahmedabad," England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said in their official statement.
An Air India flight flying from Ahmedabad to London crashed after just being a few seconds in the air straight into a medical college hostel building right on the outskirts of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. A total of 241 out of the 242 passengers onboard were killed. The official death toll is expected to cross more than 300.
Smriti Mandhana Creates History Vs England
Smriti Mandhana slammed 112 from 62 deliveries and India posted a mammoth total of 210/4 in the first innings. The stand-in Indian captain hit her first hundred in T20Is. She thus became the first Indian batter to hit a century in all three formats of the women's game.
Overall she became the fourth women's batter to do so after Heather Knight, Tammy Beaumont, Laura Wolvaardt and Beth Mooney
