A major accident took place in Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri, Odisha. There was a stampede in the crowd near Nandighosh Rath of Lord Jagannath in front of Gundicha temple at around 4 am on Sunday. During this time 3 devotees died. 50 injured, 6 of them remain in critical condition.
Those who died in the accident were Basanti Sahu (36), Premkanti Mahanti (78) and Prabhati Das. All the bodies are kept in Puri Medical College.
The accident occurred when a huge crowd gathered to visit the chariots. During this time, the stampede took place and people were crushed by falling. It is being told that there were not enough police or security forces deployed where there was a stampede.
The chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra had already reached Shraddabali (ending site). Later, Lord Jagannath’s chariot reached Gundicha temple at his aunt.

Earlier on Friday (June 27), more than 625 devotees had deteriorated due to increasing pressure of the crowd around the chariot of Goddess Subhadra. According to the administration, 70 were admitted to the hospital. The condition of 9 of these is critical.

Rath Yatra started on Friday
Lord Jagannath’s Rath Yatra started at 4 pm on Friday (27 June) in Puri. The chariot of Lord Balabhadra was first drawn. After this, the chariots of Subhadra and Jagannath were drawn. On the first day, Balabhadra’s chariot was drawn to 200 meters, Subhadra-Lord Jagannath’s chariots were also drawn for some distance.
The Rath Yatra started again at 10 am on Saturday. Devotees started pulling the three chariots. At 11.20 am, the chariot of Lord Balabhadra and at 12.20 pm, the Darpadalan chariot of Goddess Subhadra and after them Nandighosh Rath of Lord Jagannath reached Gundicha Temple at 1.11 pm.
