Dhoni Files Trademark for Nickname ‘Captain Cool’: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, former captain of the Indian cricket team, has been known for a calm mind and victory on the field. Dhoni got the nickname ‘Captain Cool’ for the nature of being calm even in adverse circumstances. Now the former captain has taken a big step about this surname and applied for the trademark of “Captain Cool”.
Actually, MS Dhoni submitted an online application on 5 June through the Trade Marx Registry Portal. By doing so, their aim is to officially claim the famous surname and include it in their growing brand. Former Indian captains want special rights to use “Captain Cool” for sports training, coaching services and training centers. The application initially obstructed under Section 11 (1) of the Trade Marx Act due to possible confusion with the existing mark. However, Dhoni’s lawyers argued that ‘Captain Cool’ had achieved a special meaning directly connected to him through the use of years of fans and media coverage, and won the matter.
In the last few years, ‘Captain Cool’ has just been more than an attractive title. This reflects Dhoni’s cool mind under pressure, winning India’s first T20 World Cup in 2007 to win the ODI World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013. No matter how tense the match is, Dhoni always looked calm, which gave him this title which is now associated with millions of people with his legacy.
The trademark gives Dhoni a chance to use ‘Captain Cool’ on clothes, digital materials, merchandise and more. This is the same as many global sports stars have done, including Michael Jordan’s ‘Jumpman’ logo or Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘CR7’. At home, Indian personalities have done the same. Salman Khan made his ‘Being Human’ charity brand, while Sourav Ganguly took advantage of his surname “Dada”.
Even though Dhoni has retired from international cricket, he is one of the largest brand names in India. In 2024, his brand value was estimated at around Rs 799 crore, and he has more than 35 big advertisements. By trademarking “Captain Cool”, Dhoni shows that he is planning to keep his cool brand alive on the field and outside the field in the coming years.
