A surge in motorbike sales in one region could raise insurance charges, according to a leading expert. New data has revealed that Wales has seen the largest increase in motorbike sales of any part of the UK since 2015. Welsh areas secured all five top spots, with the industrial town of Merthyr Tydfil leading the way.

Statistics show the area has noticed a 47.3% increase in the number of motorbikes sold between 2015 and 2024. Blaenau Gwent was next with a 43.9% rise in motorbike sales, followed by Powys (40.6%), Argyll and Bute (39.6%) and Gwynedd (37.7%).

Go.Compare motorbike insurance analysed figures from the Department for Transport and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

Tom Banks, motoring expert at Go.Compare, stressed the rise in sales would have an impact on how much riders pay for their insurance.

Tom said: "Location is one of several factors that can influence your motorbike insurance premiums. If there's a rise in the number of riders in your local area, or across the country, that could lead to more accidents, thefts or claims, which might impact what you pay for cover.

"Understanding the wider landscape in your region can give you a clearer picture of your policy price. If you're worried about rising insurance costs, there are steps you can take to try and reduce them.

"Consider paying annually to save on interest charges, reducing your annual mileage, avoiding modified styles when choosing a bike or opting for a smaller model - these can all affect premiums."

Carmarthenshire has also noticed a staggering increase in the number of motorbikes sold with a 37.4% rise noticed over the past ten years.

Mid-Ulster was next with a 34.4% rise, followed by Derry City and Strabane at 34.2% and the County of Herefordshire at 32.3%.

Newry, Mourne and Down rounded out the top 10 with a 32% increase in motorbike sales, according to the statistics.

Road users who have noticed a rise in motorbike insurance have been urged to take action and look around for the best possible deal instead of soaking up price hikes.

Tom added: "Always shop around. Your current insurer might not be offering the right deal for you, so when it's time to renew, don't forget to compare quotes from multiple providers to find a policy that works best."
