Kajol’s much-anticipated mythological horror drama Maa has finally hit theatres, sparking conversations with its bold take on the ancient tale of Goddess Kali and the demon Rakhtbeej. Directed by Vishal Furia, the film stars Kajol in the titular role, with Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, and Kherin Sharma in prominent roles. Notably, Maa marks Ronit Roy’s second collaboration with Kajol after nearly three decades, adding a nostalgic touch for fans.
Strong Buzz, Mixed Reactions
Following the success of Ajay Devgn and R. Madhavan’s Shaitaan, expectations were high for Maa, thanks to its intriguing trailer and impactful visuals. However, despite the initial hype, the film received mixed reviews from audiences. While Kajol’s performance and the mythological narrative were praised, many felt the film lacked emotional resonance and depth, leading to underwhelming box office numbers.
According to Sacnilk, Maa collected Rs 7 crore on its third day (Sunday), pushing its total opening weekend collection to Rs 17.65 crore. The numbers, although modest, fell short of expectations for such a high-profile release.
