Wimbledon fans have been left torn after spotting a major update to the competition’s iconic scoreboard on the BBC. The latest edition of the competition got underway in SW19 on Monday.

Reigning men’s champion Carlos Alcaraz was among those in action as he took on Italian star Fabio Fogini. And fans tuning into the game were left surprised as they noticed a subtle tweak to the BBC’s live coverage.

Usually, the channel’s coverage displays the scoreboard as the number of sets won per player, as well as the scores in the one currently in play. That is at odds with the coverage of the Australian Open, French Open and US Open that displays the scores in each set.

But this time around, the BBC brought their coverage in line with other tournaments by displaying each set’s scores. And fans struggled to make their minds up over whether the change was positive or not.

One said: "Sacred grass, classy whites. Tennis’ purest theatre. It’s Wimbledon time. With sleek new scoreboard graphics,” another said: " Wimbledon score graphics are so fresh. Minimalist, elegant and instantly iconic."

Some fans were completely against the change however. One fan wrote on Twitter : "The new Wimbledon graphic stinks,” with another adding: “New Wimbledon score graphics? Not sure I like it…”

The scoring was not the only alteration, with the player’s names also being listed in seeding order. While the new graphics got fans talking, the main headline was certainly the tennis.

Alcaraz only just squeezed through against Fogini, winning three sets to two, while a fan also fainted in the middle of the pair’s showdown. The reigning men’s singles champion offered his water bottle in an effort to aide her recovery.

Alcaraz has now been sent a warning by Oliver Tarvot, who he will take on in the next round. He said: “As a kid, it’s what you dream of. I came here when I was a little kid. It’s what you work for. Obviously, it’s a pretty long-term goal.

“But for it to happen so suddenly has been really special. I’ve come here and not really set myself any expectations. I’m quietly confident that I can win against anyone. Alcaraz isn’t an exception to that.

“Obviously, he’s done an incredible amount in the tennis world. He’s a difficult guy not to respect. But just go out there and try and treat it like another match.”
