Support for Jaiswal Before Edgbaston Test
As the second Test approaches at Edgbaston on July 2, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate has expressed his support for opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who faced challenges in the field during the first Test against England in Leeds.
Dropped Catches Impact India's Performance
India's fielding woes were evident in the first Test, where they missed several catching opportunities, contributing to a five-wicket loss at Headingley. In total, the team dropped eight catches, which cost them approximately 250 runs, a significant margin that could have altered the match's outcome. Jaiswal was notably responsible for four of these dropped chances.
Managing Jaiswal's Confidence
During a pre-match press conference, Ten Doeschate emphasized the importance of maintaining Jaiswal's confidence. He stated, "We always aim for depth in our catching lineup. In England, having four catchers is crucial at various points in the game. Yashasvi has been a reliable catcher for us, and we want to ensure his confidence remains intact. Given the importance of the short leg position, especially with two spinners, we might consider rotating fielders to relieve Jaiswal from catching in the gully for a bit, as he has been experiencing some soreness in his hands."
Details of Jaiswal's Dropped Catches
In the first innings, Jaiswal dropped a catch off Ben Duckett when he was on 11, who later scored 62. Additionally, he missed another chance with Ollie Pope, who went on to score 106 after being dropped on 60. Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant also dropped a catch of Harry Brook, who was on 46 and eventually scored 99. Jaiswal's struggles continued as he dropped another catch off Duckett when he was on 97, allowing him to finish with 149 runs.
Other Fielding Errors
Debutant Sai Sudharsan also contributed to the catching issues by dropping Jamie Smith's catch when he had only 19 runs. In the second innings, Jasprit Bumrah failed to catch Zak Crawley's delivery, allowing him to score 65. Jaiswal's fourth dropped catch further highlighted India's fielding challenges.
