New Delhi : The Indian team won the T20 World Cup title on this day last year, 29 June. The Indian team was successful in winning the T20 title for the first time after 2007. India won the second T20 World Cup title by defeating South Africa. It has been a year today.
Rohit Sharma, recalling India’s T20 World Cup victory under his captaincy, said that he was very nervous before the final match against South Africa and could not sleep the whole night. The pressure of this match was such that he felt that his leg had become numb. After 2011, the World Cup title was won after 13 years.
Rohit told Jio Hotstar that 13 years is a long time. Most people’s careers don’t even last 13 years. Waiting so long to win the World Cup, I won my last World Cup in 2007. Nothing could have been bigger than this for me. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. I was just thinking about the World Cup. I was nervous. I couldn’t feel my legs.
He said, “Was I under pressure? I didn’t want to show it but I was very nervous inside. We had to leave for the stadium at 8:30 or 9 in the morning. I woke up at 7 in the morning. I could see the ground from my room. I remember thinking, ‘After two hours I will be on the ground and after about four hours the result of the match will be almost decided.’
The Indian captain termed Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant catch of David Miller in the last over as the decisive moment of the final. He said that after Suryakumar’s catch, the umpires sought the help of the third umpire to decide on it. At this time everyone’s heartbeat was increasing. I was right in front of Suryakumar at long off at that time and initially I thought the ball had gone for six runs. Suryakumar showed alertness while fielding near the boundary and took a brilliant catch. This catch ensured India’s victory by seven runs.
When we lost three wickets early, there was obviously a lot of panic in the dressing room. I was not comfortable. I was thinking that we gave them a chance to take hold of the match. However, it was always in my mind that our lower middle order did not bat much in the tournament but whenever they got a chance, they made an impact. Rohit said that not many people are talking about (Axar’s) innings, but that innings was very important in terms of deciding the course of the match. At that time, scoring 47 runs in 31 balls was very, very important.
