Known for his intense and cerebral performances, actor Kay Kay Menon stepped far out of his comfort zone in the 2007 ensemble comedy Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd . Playing a socially awkward Bengali husband opposite Raima Sen, he surprised audiences with his quirky and comic sid, especially in the lively dance number ' Sajna Ji Vaari Vaari '.
In a recent conversation with Shubhankar Mishra on YouTube, Kay Kay looked back at that memorable shoot with fond laughter. “I played a nerdy guy who unknowingly gets high after drinking something spiked,” he recalled. The scene required him to channel an uninhibited, out-of-character energy, and director Reema Kagti ’s clear vision helped him fully dive into the role. “Once I understood it, my character just opened up,” he said.
When Farah Khan Was Convinced He Was Actually High
The song was choreographed by Farah Khan and shot on a yacht. But Kay Kay wanted to keep the dancing organic, in line with his character’s accidental high. “I told Farah, ‘Please don’t give me those aerobic-style steps. Let me just move with the character.’ And she agreed,” he shared.
What followed was an uninhibited, free-spirited dance that left Farah puzzled. “After a few takes, she stopped me and asked, ‘Kay Kay, are you drunk?’ I said no. Then she asked, ‘Did you take some drug?’ She genuinely thought I had taken something,” he said with a grin. “I had to convince her I was just acting. What people don’t know is, I don’t drink at all.”
A Quirky Film With a Memorable Cast
Directed by Reema Kagti, 'Honeymoon Travels Pvt Ltd' was a dramedy about six couples on a group honeymoon trip to Goa. With a cast that included Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani , Abhay Deol, Minissha Lamba , and more, the film became a charming cult favourite, and Kay Kay’s dancing remains one of its most unforgettable moments.
