Midsomer Murders continues to be a staple for ITV with the network showing reruns from the show's 22nd season.
Episode two, titled The Stitcher Society, is airing tonight (July 1) and it features guest stars Keith Allen and John Thomson.
One of the main stars of the series was Daniel Casey, who played Gavin Troy from the first ever episode up until 2003.
He acted as DCI Tom Barnaby's (John Nettles) companion, helping him navigate complex murders.
He did make a comeback in season 11 for the wedding of Tom's daughter, Cully (Laura Howard), but his return was short-lived.
Daniel previously spoke to Saga magazine about why he left the series, saying: "I was just aware I didn't want to stay with the same thing for too long and I wanted to branch out."
With this in mind, it seems Daniel simply wanted to broaden his horizons, although he did pay tribute to his co-stars.
"I had a fantastic time," he said. "John and I got on really well, from the first day really."
After leaving Midsomer Murders, the 53-year-old went on to star in EastEnders as Tom Bailey. He played various other characters in Doctors, Casualty, Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
In May 2025, it was reported he would be returning to Midsomer Murders in a stage production of The Killings at Badger's Drift.
However, he will not be reprising his original role, and will instead be playing the role of Tom Barnaby.
Speaking to Norwich Theatre, he said: "I never expected to revisit the world of Midsomer, with its weird and wonderful characters and all their dark, twisted secrets.
"So to be asked to play the iconic role of Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby in this new stage adaptation of The Killings at Badger's Drift was a real surprise."
He added: "It has brought back some wonderful memories of such a happy time in my career playing Sgt Troy and the fantastic time I had working with the amazing John Nettles and to be stepping into his shoes as Barnaby is both a little daunting and incredibly exciting."
Midsomer Murders airs on ITV at 8pm
