BBC Radio 2 descended into chaos on Tuesday morning as Vernon Kay unexpectedly failed to turn up in time for his show.

The popular presenter usually kicks things off at 9.30am after the Breakfast Show wraps up, but he didn't make it in time due to travel woes while on his way to the London studio.

Sara Cox, who was standing in for Scott Mills's usual slot, continued the Breakfast Show's broadcast for an unexpected extra 30 minutes.

After the 10am news, Gary Davies' iconic voice filled the air, stepping in as Vernon's makeshift replacement.

Joking about his disrupted plans, Gary informed the listeners: "I was supposed to be teeing off around now but it's just going to have to wait," reports the Manchester Evening News.

Further details spilled out as he explained that Vernon was trapped aboard a train - complete with power failure and non-operational doors.

Gary quipped about Vernon's predicament, saying: "He's not going nowhere. And he's still trying to get here. Will he make it or not? If you spot him let me know where he is."

A light-hearted voice note from Vernon himself featured next, where he said: "Hi Gary, it's Vernon. I'm sat on a train, thanks very much for covering for me."

He even got his fellow stranded passengers involved, prompting them to greet the radio audience, prior to wishing Gary a splendid stint on-air.

Listeners were quick to flood Gary, normally the host of Sounds of the 80s, with cheeky messages, with one quipping: "I can't believe you gave up golf. Vern and I are teeing of now."

A second said: "Are you sure Vern's not on EuroStar making a break for it?" Another fan suggested he seeks compensation, advising: "Tell Vern to make sure he puts his delay repay claim in."

Gary couldn't help but chime in on the uncertain situation, adding: "Who knows if he will make it here before midday. We'll have to wait to find out really."

Later on, Vernon gave an exasperated update from the scene: "Quick update... the train that's supposed to help us has an issue transferring its power to our train. It's broken."
