Rs 2000 Notes Still in Circulation RBI

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has given a big update regarding the 2000 rupee note. According to the latest RBI data, even though it was announced to exclude these notes from circulation two years ago, there are still 2000 rupee notes of Rs 6,099 crore in the market. These notes still remain legal tenders.

In fact, on 19 May 2023, RBI announced the removal of a 2000 rupee note from circulation. At that time, 2000 rupee notes worth Rs 3.56 lakh crore were present in the market. Now two years later, by 30 June 2025, the total value of these notes has come down to Rs 6,099 crore. That is, 98.29 percent notes of that time have been returned. But still thousands of crores of rupees notes are in the market or market.

Facility to deposit note still continues

RBI said that the facility of depositing or replacing 2000 rupee notes was earlier available in all banks till 7 October 2023. But even now you can deposit or change these notes in 19 issue of RBI. Not only this, people can also deposit these notes in their bank accounts in the issue office of RBI from 9 October 2023.

Can also send notes from post office

If you are not able to go to a bank or RBI office, then there is no need to panic. RBI has given another easy way. You can send a 2000 rupee note from any post office in the country to any RBI issue office. From there, these notes will be deposited in your bank account. This facility is proving to be very helpful for the people, especially for those who live in remote areas.

Why was the decision to withdraw the note?

Regarding the 2000 rupee note, RBI says that these notes had fulfilled their motives. In fact, after demonetisation in 2016, these notes were brought to the market so that the lack of cash could be met. But now that small value notes are available in sufficient quantity, RBI decided to gradually remove the 2000 rupee note. However, these notes are still valid and can be used in transactions.
