Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh): A 35-year-old woman attempted suicide by drinking phenyl during a public hearing at the Superintendent of Police (SP) office in Gwalior on Tuesday.

She was upset that her repeated complaints of abuse involving her and her children were not being taken seriously by the police.

The entire scene was captured on video, where the woman can be seen drinking phenyl while police personnel stand nearby. As she begins to vomit, they are seen asking her to drink water.

According to the woman, she had been visiting Madhauganj and the women's police station for a long time, trying to file a case against two men—Ashish Mehta and Puneet Kumar—who allegedly abused her and her children after taking them to Delhi for work and study.

She claimed the men, known to her, misbehaved with her during the journey and in Delhi, and also mistreated her children. After the incident, she brought her children back and has been seeking justice since.

She said that despite many visits to the police stations, officers kept ignoring her and sending her away.

On Tuesday, she came to the SP’s Jan Sunwai (public hearing) along with her 15-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son. When her complaint was again not addressed, she opened a bottle of phenyl and drank it in front of the officers.

The police personnel at the spot panicked and rushed her and the children to JAH Hospital in a police vehicle. She was admitted to the poison ward. Police officials have not given clear statements about the case, only saying that she was being called in for investigation but did not show up.

The woman had lost her husband in 2021 and has been working as a laborer to support her children. This is not the first time such an incident has happened during a public hearing in Gwalior. In the past, similar extreme steps have been taken by other victims at the Collectorate and SP Office.

CSP Lashkar Manish Yadav confirmed the woman drank phenyl and said the matter is under investigation.

He noted that the complaint is from four years ago.
