The iconic Edgbaston stadium in Birmingham is set to host the second Test between England and India, running from July 2 to July 6. After a heartbreaking loss at Headingley, where India let the game slip away from a dominant position, the visitors will hope to bounce back to level the five-match series. Historically, Edgbaston hasn’t been a happy hunting ground for India, with eight matches played here and not a single win to their name.

Edgbaston Pitch Report

The Edgbaston surface is known for its complex nature. On Day 1, the pitch is expected to provide swing and seam movement, especially under overcast skies. With 11mm of grass reported two days before the match and a dry surface beneath, seamers will have considerable help in the beginning. Traditionally, teams bowling first have had more success at Edgbaston, winning 23 out of 56 Tests.

As the match progresses, batting tends to become easier, especially on Days 2 and 3, where the pitch tends to be on a flatter side. However, spinners will have a big role to play on Days 4 and 5 as the rough patches develop. Edgbaston is among the least spin-friendly venues in England this decade, with spinners averaging over 44 per wicket here.

Edgbaston Weather Forecast

The weather in Birmingham is expected to play a big role in the second Test. According to Accuweather, Day 1 (July 2) has a high probability of rain, with an 82% chance of precipitation and 86% cloud cover. These conditions will favour the fast bowlers. It could be a stop-start kind of day, and teams bowling first might have early success.

Day 2 (July 3) is expected to see only a 5% chance of rain and a cloud cover of 37%. This should provide ideal batting conditions. Day 3 (July 4) is expected to remain dry, but will be influenced by overcast conditions with a 99% cloud cover. While the precipitation chances will be low, the bowlers will remain in the game. Rain is likely to return on Day 4 (July 5), with a 66% chance of precipitation and 98% cloud cover forecasted. Day 5 (July 6) carries a 60% chance of rain and 78% cloud cover, making the full day’s play at risk.
