Veteran Pakistani actor and former singer Khaled Anam recently sparked a nationwide debate with his bold remarks about the evolving nature of Muharram observances. Appearing on the podcast Off The School, Anam expressed concern over what he described as the “commercialization and performance” of Noha recitations, traditionally a solemn act of mourning in the Islamic month of Muharram.
In his candid commentary, Khaled Anam questioned the modern-day portrayal of grief, saying,
“What are we doing during Muharram? Noha is being played at full volume, and you’re acting with expressions. Boys are sitting around, chewing gutka and pretending to grieve. It’s turned into some kind of performance or festival.”
He further criticized the stylistic delivery of Noha Khuwani, pointing out that even without musical instruments, the rhythmic patterns and dramatic vocals mirror entertainment formats.
“You’ve replaced music with vocal rhythms. You call it a Noha, but it sounds like a song. Why are you turning a sacred message into a performance?”
Khaled emphasized that the true essence of Muharram lies in reflection, sincerity, and the message of sacrifice associated with the tragedy of Karbala—not in theatrical displays or mass-produced albums.
“It’s not about sets, expressions, or albums—it’s about the message. Listen to the Noha, feel its meaning, and let it impact your heart,” he stressed.
The actor’s comments quickly circulated across social media, drawing a wide spectrum of reactions. Many praised Khaled Anam for voicing what they felt was a much-needed reality check. One user commented,
“Religion is a business now. The more theatrical you make it, the more attention and money it brings.”
Another supporter wrote,
“This is exactly the reminder we need. We’ve lost the soul of Karbala somewhere in the showmanship.”
However, his remarks also drew criticism from others who felt he overstepped by commenting on religious traditions.
“Actors should stick to acting. Why are they now lecturing us on religious matters?” one critic wrote.
Another questioned his own spiritual authority, asking,
“Can you explain your life through the teachings of Imam Sadiq (A.S.) before pointing fingers?”
Despite mixed opinions, the majority of netizens appeared to resonate with Khaled Anam’s message, calling it a timely reminder to bring sincerity back to religious observance.
Khaled Anam, who has been a prominent figure in Pakistani media for over two decades, is known not only for his acting talent but also for his thoughtful social commentary. Married to media personality Tehmina Khaled, he is also the father of two sons involved in music and acting.
