Chennai: After enduring a rainless June and a 10-day dry spell, Chennai is set to receive much-needed rainfall over the next 10 days, according to private weather blogger Pradeep John known as Tamil Nadu weatherman. The city, which experienced uncharacteristically good rains in May, saw a sharp shift in weather patterns last month, with soaring temperatures causing discomfort for residents. However, relief is on the horizon as evening and night-time showers are expected to bring temporary respite.

The rains, though sporadic, are likely to occur in different parts of the city, particularly in the KTCC region – covering Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur, and Chengalpattu. John emphasized that these showers will not be widespread but rather scattered, with some areas receiving brief spells while others remain dry. The sudden change in weather has brought hope to residents after weeks of relentless heat.

“After nearly 10 dry days in KTCC (Chennai and other surrounding districts), there’s some hope on the horizon! Starting today, we can expect short spells of rain across various parts of Chennai. These short spells are likely in the evenings / nights for the next 10 days. Not all places in city will get rains. These are hit and miss types, ” Pradeep John said.

Contrary to expectations, the upcoming rains are not linked to monsoon activity. Instead, they are the result of local atmospheric conditions and convection. Pradeep John clarified on Twitter that while North Tamil Nadu districts like Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, and Salem may also see isolated showers, the rainfall will be inconsistent.

Chennai’s weather this year has been unusual, with May recording higher-than-normal rainfall, followed by an arid June. The return of evening rains, though not heavy, is expected to provide some relief from the persistent dry heat. However, John cautioned against expecting continuous or widespread rainfall, advising residents to stay updated as the showers will be unpredictable over the coming days.
