During a recent visit to a deportation facility in South Florida, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem recounted a harrowing incident involving a migrant who engaged in self-cannibalism. This alarming event occurred while federal agents were escorting the individual on a deportation flight, where he reportedly began to harm himself by eating his own arms. The situation escalated to the point where US Marshals had to intervene and provide immediate medical assistance.
Noem, aged 53, shared this unsettling story at a camp known as 'Alligator Alcatraz,' situated in the Everglades. She was accompanied by President Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, as they convened to discuss the newly established immigration detention center.
In her remarks, Noem stated, 'Recently, I spoke with marshals collaborating with ICE. They informed me about a cannibal they had detained and placed on a plane for deportation. While seated, he began to eat himself, necessitating his removal for medical care,' as reported by a media outlet.
She emphasized the need to remove such 'deranged individuals' from American streets, asserting that they pose a danger to communities and families striving for a safe environment.
Noem, who previously served as South Dakota's governor, narrated this incident to illustrate that federal agents are focusing on apprehending the most dangerous illegal immigrants, rather than targeting law-abiding individuals, as some critics suggest.
According to reports, the state of Florida constructed the detention center, located approximately 40 miles from Miami and surrounded by hazardous wildlife, in just eight days following the Trump administration's acceptance of the state's proposal to utilize the land for mass deportation efforts.
The Department of Homeland Security has indicated that the facility could eventually accommodate up to 5,000 detainees. Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, mentioned that the center might initially hold around 1,000 individuals within the next 30 to 60 days.
Noem also warned that those who do not self-deport may face deportation and lose the opportunity to return to the United States in the future.
