Delhi Government Halts End-of-Life Vehicle Policy

In response to growing public concern, the Delhi government has decided to suspend its policy on the seizure of End-of-Life Vehicles (EOL) just two days after its implementation. This decision follows significant backlash from residents and criticism from opposition leaders regarding the fuel restrictions imposed on EOL vehicles in the national capital. Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Environment Minister of Delhi, has written to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), requesting the suspension of the directive that prohibited fuel supply to EOL vehicles in the city.

Acknowledging the discontent among the populace, Sirsa stated that the government stands with the residents. He announced that there would be no seizure of old vehicles in the national capital. The Chief Minister has assured residents that old vehicles will not be arbitrarily confiscated. "We will not allow the seizure of old vehicles. At the same time, we are committed to controlling pollution in Delhi," he remarked, noting that residents are already facing challenges associated with EOL vehicles. The government has informed the CAQM that it lacks the necessary infrastructure to enforce this policy.

Sirsa pointed out that owners of old vehicles are obtaining fuel from neighboring cities like Noida, Faridabad, and Gurugram, where such restrictions do not exist. He suggested that the ban should be applied across the National Capital Region (NCR) and criticized the previous government for not establishing stringent criteria for old vehicles. Sirsa claimed that the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are malfunctioning, the loudspeakers are ineffective, and there is a lack of coordination regarding vehicle data in Delhi-NCR. He further added, "There are numerous technical glitches, and the government lacks a real-time system to inform citizens about their vehicles being marked as EOL."
