The bed runner isn’t just decorative, it protects the clean white bedsheet from dirt, dust, or germs brought in by shoes, bags, or outer clothing during hotel stays

If you’ve ever stayed in a hotel, you’ve probably noticed a cloth strip placed at the foot of the bed. Many assume it’s simply for decoration, but this colourful piece of fabric, known as a bed runner, serves a much more practical purpose.

According to hospitality experts, the bed runner is not just an aesthetic addition. Its main function is to protect the clean white bedsheet from dirt, dust, or germs brought in by bags, shoes, or clothing from outside.

Real Purpose?

As per Homemaking.com, “Guests often place their luggage, coats, or even shoes on the edge of the bed as soon as they enter. The bed runner acts as a protective layer, helping to keep the bedsheets clean.” If you’re someone who sits at the edge of the bed to put on shoes or tosses a backpack onto the bed, this strip gives you a designated surface to do so.

Besides offering practical protection, bed runners also add a touch of colour and visual balance to an otherwise plain white bed. However, it’s worth noting that these runners are not washed as frequently as sheets or pillow covers. Experts advise removing the runner immediately if you’re not planning to use it, especially to avoid contact with accumulated dirt.

Things To Keep In Mind

A recent report by security experts from Locksmith Dartford highlights that certain areas of hotel rooms can appear clean but may actually harbour germs. Items such as bedspreads, decorative pillows, and throw blankets are often not washed regularly. These can accumulate dead skin cells, body fluids, saliva, and dust over time. To maintain hygiene during your stay, follow these simple tips:

  • Remove bed runners and decorative pillows as soon as you enter the room.
  • Run hot water in the shower for a minute before use to eliminate lingering bacteria.
  • Wipe down or sanitise the TV remote, or place it inside a plastic bag before use.
  • Rinse the bathtub lightly with shower gel or shampoo before stepping in.

So, the next time you check into a hotel, keep these tips in mind for a cleaner and safer stay.
