Modi's Visit to Trinidad and Tobago

During his visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the journey of the Indian community as one filled with courage, noting that the hardships faced by their ancestors could have broken even the strongest individuals. This statement was made at a community event held at the National Cycling Velodrome in Couva on Thursday. Modi arrived in Trinidad and Tobago as part of a two-day official trip, which marks the second phase of his tour across five nations.

At the event, he expressed that participating in the gathering of the Indian community felt entirely natural, as he considers them part of a family. Trinidad and Tobago has a population of approximately 1.3 million, with 45% of its residents being of Indian descent. Modi remarked, “The journey of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago is indeed courageous.”

Cultural Connections and Historical Roots

On Friday, during his address to the Indian community in Port of Spain, Modi referred to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as 'the daughter of Bihar,' highlighting her ancestral roots in Buxar, Bihar. He noted that many individuals in Trinidad have connections to Bihar, emphasizing the strong cultural ties between the two nations. Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Kamla warmly welcomed him at the airport, dressed in traditional Indian attire, accompanied by her entire cabinet, many of whom were also in Indian clothing.

At a dinner hosted by Prime Minister Kamla, food was served on Sohari leaves, which hold significant cultural importance for the people of Trinidad and Tobago, particularly those of Indian heritage. This practice is common during festivals and special occasions.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

Modi, who made his first contact with the Indian community during this visit, expressed that it felt completely natural, as they are part of the same family. He reiterated the courage of the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, stating that their ancestors faced challenges that could have defeated even the strongest spirits. However, they persevered with hope and resilience.

He stated, “They left behind the Ganges and Yamuna, but carried the essence of the Ramayana in their hearts,” referring to them as messengers of an eternal civilization. Modi described the community event in Port of Spain as magnificent, noting the energy and warmth of the people made it truly unforgettable. He emphasized that the cultural bonds between India and Trinidad and Tobago shine brightly.

Contributions of the Indian Community

In his speech, Modi highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian community to Trinidad and Tobago, stating that they have enriched the nation culturally, economically, and spiritually. He referenced prominent figures of Indian descent in the country, including Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo, noting that the descendants of indentured laborers are now recognized for their success, service, and values rather than their struggles.
