A teenage footballer who plays for Polish club Legia Warsaw is fighting for his life in hospital after being involved in a car crash which killed his older sister. Police say that Ksawery Jezewski, 17, was in a Toyota vehicle when it veered off and struck a tree, claiming the life of his 18-year-old sibling.

The tragedy occurred in Goslice near the city of Plock. Jezewski plays for Legia's under-17 side and is considered a rising star in the capital.

In autumn last year, the striker represented Poland at U17 level. Jezewski previously played in Wisla Plock's academy before joining 15-time Polish champions Legia.

On Thursday, Legia issued a statement which read: "Legia U17 player Ksawery Jezewski is in the hospital in critical condition following a tragic car accident in which his sister passed away.

"The board, club staff, teammates, and coaches from the Academy extend their deepest condolences to Ksawery's parents and share in their grief. We will provide all possible support to our player and his family. Ksawery, the entire club is with you."

A police spokesperson gave details on the incident to Polish newspaper Przeglad Sportowy. "A Toyota Yaris left the road for unexplained reasons and hit a tree," they said. "The footballer's 18-year-old sister died at the scene, and the 17-year-old footballer was taken to hospital.

"The causes of the accident are unknown, but according to initial findings, the vehicle was not moving at high speed. The police have not yet determined who was driving the car."

The tragic news comes after Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his brother, Andre Silva, who was also a professional footballer, both died in a crash crash on Thursday. They were travelling in a Lamborghini on the A-52 in Palacios de Sanabria, Spain near the city of Zamora.

A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Zamora confirmed: "The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road.

"The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash. That report is going to take time to complete, probably about four or five days but possibly longer.

"At this moment in time it is impossible to say at exactly what speed the car was going but that is something the Civil Guard investigators will be able to detail at least approximately in their final report from things like the skid marks. What I can confirm is that no other vehicle was involved and no-one else was hurt."
