Thankfully, those unsightly brown marks dominating your loo aren't actually grime. They're merely mineral deposits, also referred to as limescale, accumulating in the toilet. These encompass minerals like iron, calcium, magnesium and lime, which gradually cause the limescale to develop a brown hue.

Limescale deposits harden like concrete, and no amount of vigorous scrubbing with a toilet brush will budge them. Yet they develop an unpleasant brown tinge, making your loo appear grubby despite regular cleaning. Before reaching for the bleach, bear in mind that bleach won't eliminate limescale. It merely whitens it, making the stains less visible.

Fortunately, Jottie, the creator behind TikTok account @jottiesjournal, has revealed that the "ideal" natural remedy for banishing toilet limescale is citric acid, insisting it's also effective against mould.

She explained: "Citric acid is a great naturally powerful product to remove both limescale and mould, making it perfect for our toilets. I simply diluted two tablespoons of citric acid in warm water and poured it into an empty spray bottle.

"I also placed two teaspoons in the toilet; you may need more depending on how bad your limescale is. I left for 15 minutes, but if bad, leave overnight."

Frequently praised as one of the most versatile natural cleaning products, citric acid makes an excellent choice for sprucing up your toilet.

Its antibacterial, antifungal, degreasing and brightening properties have been utilised by countless individuals worldwide. When limescale comes into contact with citric acid, it dissolves to create calcium citrate, reports the Express.

This results in a soluble salt that can be effortlessly rinsed away without the requirement for vigorous scrubbing.

Cleaning guru Lynsey Crombie endorses the use of citric acid for sprucing up toilets as well. She remarked, "Using citric acid to clean your toilet is not only an effective but also a safe alternative to commercial cleaners."

Nonetheless, she advises allowing the citric acid to settle in the toilet bowl for "at least one hour" or even "overnight" to achieve the "best results".
