Zagreb: India's D. Gukesh, the current World Number 1 in Classical format of Chess beat Magnus Carlsen at the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia 2025 in Zagreb on Thursday.
Gukesh's latest win against the Norwegien legend comes just a few weeks after Norway Chess tournament. Unlike in Norway Chess where the victory was in the classical format, the latest win comes in the rapid format.
Carlsen resigned after 49 moves on Thursday, it was followed by a handshake and then he proceeded to walk off the stage. This was in stark contrast to the emotional reaction at Stavanger where after the loss he fist smashed the table.
Indecently, prior to the start of the tournament here, Carlsen had questioned Gukesh's credentials in rapid and blitz formats.
Gukesh heads into the third and final day of rapid section as the sole leader with 10 points. With three more games to play, Gukesh is two points ahead of Jan-Krzysztof Duda, who is second in the points table.
