Meanwhile, FC Basel, the Swiss champions, have hit a snag in talks with FC Troyes over Metinho, paving the way for a potential move to Rangers.

The Ibrox club were linked with the 22 year old Brazilian midfielder this week following his successful loan spell with the Swiss champions.

He played a key role in their Swiss Cup double victory this season, but his loan period has ended and he has returned to his French second tier team.

Troyes splashed out £4 million to capture Metinho from Fluminense four years ago. According to reports, however, Basel are hesitant to meet the £5 million asking price required to seal the deal on a permanent basis.

The club's sporting director, Daniel Stucki, revealed to Sport: "They're demanding something we don't want to pay."

He added: "A deal is parked, but he absolutely wants to stay and knows it would be good for him."
