Dreaming of a quieter life by the sea or in the countryside? New data reveals the five most popular places to retire in the UK - and only one of them is north of Birmingham. According to the Office for National Statistics, retirees are flocking to Dorset, Shropshire, Wiltshire, Cornwall and Northumberland - drawn by scenic landscapes, low crime, and a slower pace of life.

Top of the list is Dorset, with its mild climate, stunning Jurassic Coast and charming towns like Bridport and Christchurch. With an average property price of £350,000, it's a firm favourite among retirees - and home to one of the highest concentrations of pensioners in the country.

Shropshire, with average prices of £275,000, may lack a coastline, but it more than makes up for it with rolling hills, historic towns like Shrewsbury, and landmarks such as the Ironbridge Gorge and Ludlow Castle. It's ideal for those who prefer countryside to coast.

Wiltshire, known for its ancient monuments and elegant villages, offers both history and beauty. Home to Stonehenge and Salisbury Cathedral, almost half the county is officially designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Property here averages around £326,000.

Cornwall, beloved for its golden beaches and world-class cuisine, is another strong contender. With property prices around £299,000, popular retirement spots like Falmouth and Porthleven offer seaside charm with a strong sense of community.

Finally, Northumberland stands out as the only northern county in the top five - and the most affordable, with an average house price of £203,000. Its sweeping coastline, historic castles and peaceful towns such as Alnmouth and Warkworth make it a haven for those seeking space, sea air and a slower pace of life.

Whether you're after coastal views, historic charm or tranquil countryside, these five counties prove the UK has plenty to offer those ready to put their feet up - and start a new chapter.
