Yarm Road Fish and Chips, located on the south-eastern outskirts of County Durham town Darlington,has been awarded the honour of Takeaway of the Year in the National Fish and Chip Awards 2025.

With fish and chips being most associated with seaside towns, it is both surprising and impressive that a takeaway in inland Darlington has taken the top prize for 2025 - beating out thousands of chippies up and down the country. Darlington is more than 17 miles away from a beach, far further than the majority of takeaways included in this year's top 40.

Yarm Road Fish and Chips is one of the most northern takeaways included in this year's top 40, with two other nominations coming in nearby Middlesbrough and Saltburn-on-Sea.

Customers have gushed with delight when reviewing Yarm Road Fish and Chips online, with particular focus on the quality of the batter, which one TripAdvisor user, rhondag099, referred to as "perfectly cooked crispy batter without being greasy".

The takeaway claims to have "secret" ingredients that make the batter taste so special. Having been in business for more than 20 years, they have had time to refine and perfect their recipes.

A fresh cod and chips will set you back less than £10, a rare sight nowadays across the country, while a jumbo sausage and chips is even better value at just £5.30. The takeaway boasts a wide array of options from classic staples such as burgers, pies, fritters and chicken to different tastes such as halloumi and haggis.

There is something for everyone at Yarm Road Fish and Chips, and another TripAdvisor user, Tess1311, was extremely satisfied with the gluten free fish and chips, noting that the takeaway also stocked gluten free vinegar, calling her meal "absolutely delicious".

The National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) complimented Yarm Road Fish and Chips on its cleanliness, superb customer service, consistent cooking and high-quality ingredients.

Andrew Crook, president of the NFFF, said "Making the top 40 fish and chip Takeaway of the Year list is a huge achievement for these outlets that have all worked extremely hard to make it on there, and all of which have had to go through a rigorous judging process by a panel of fish and chip experts."

The Fish Works, in the small Scottish town of Largs, placed in second for the 2025 awards. Kellaway's Fish and Chips in Truro, down in Cornwall, came in at third place.
