New Delhi. Nehal Deepak Modi (Nehal Deepak Modi), brother of Nirav Modi, another important accused in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam, has been arrested in the US. The arrest was made on 4 July 2025 by the US Department of Justice on a joint appeal of India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Investigation Bureau (CBI). It is considered a major diplomatic and legal success in the investigation into India’s biggest banking scam.
Nehal Modi has been arrested under the formal extradition request of the Government of India and now the process of extradition has started in the US. According to the complaint filed by the US prosecution, extradition proceedings are being taken against Nehal Modi on the basis of two main allegations. Nehal Modi is accused that he hid illegal earnings of crores of rupees, helping his brother Nirav Modi and made him move through shell companies and foreign transactions. Nehal Modi has been nominated as co-accused in the charge sheet of the Enforcement Directorate, and is also accused of eradicating evidence.
Red corner notice was released in 2019
Let us know that in 2019, Interpol issued a red corner notice against Nehal Modi. Earlier, interpol notices have also been issued against his brother Nirav Modi and Nishal Modi. Nehal is a Belgian citizen and was born in Antwerp. He knows English, Hindi and Gujarati languages. Nirav Modi is already lodged in Britain’s jail and his extradition process is also going on. Nirav Modi and his maternal uncle Mehul Choksi are the main criminals of the PNB scam, in which the bank suffered a loss of about Rs 14,000 crore.
Next hearing on extradition on 17 July
The next hearing in Nehal Modi’s extradition case has been set on 17 July 2025, which will have a ‘status conference’. During this time a bail petition can also be filed by Nehal Modi, which will be opposed by the US prosecution. This arrest is not only a strategic achievement for India’s investigative agencies, but it will also strengthen the process of reaching the bottom of the PNB scam and bringing the culprits into the grip of law.
