Preparations in Sabina Park for its inaugural day-night Test, to be hosted next week as part of Australia's current tour of the Caribbean, are running into the wire. Installation of new floodlights was subjected to several delays, first to be done early this year, then until May, but only recently installed. Nonetheless, during recent test periods, one section in front of the Kingston Cricket Club stand proved to be underlit.

The setbacks notwithstanding, the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) is still optimistic that the stadium would be completed in time for the third Test beginning on July 12. The last go-ahead from the International Cricket Council (ICC) will wait upon inspection by officials due to visit a couple of days prior to when the next Day-Night match is being held.

At the same time, the India-funded upgrade of the scoreboard and replay screen has also been delayed. There was further work to be done after flaws were found when dismantling the old structure, which of course took longer than initially anticipated.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) remains hopeful that the third Test at Sabina Park will take place as a Day-Night match. The ground is also to stage the first two T20 Internationals of the series under lights following the end of the Test series. This will be only the second-ever day-night Test in the Caribbean with the first having been between West Indies and Sri Lanka at Barbados in 2018.

Australia, on the other hand, boast a good record in day-night Tests, having won 12 of the last 13 matches. Their only defeat was against West Indies in the Gabba last summer. With a pink-ball Test included in each Australian home summer, they are by far the most seasoned team in this format.
